The Toyota Me.We Electric Concept Car is liberating

Toyota concept car

We here at Suburban Toyota Scion of Troy are very excited about the new Toyota ME.WE electric concept car. Try not to get too excited, though — it’s just a concept … for now.

The Me.We concept

The Me.We concept was born of the collaboration between Toyota’s European design team and noted architect and industrial designer Jean-Marie Massaud. Car and Driver quotes Massaud describing the concept’s raison d’être like this: “By losing sight of reality and as a result of an idealized approach, the car has become an accumulation of constraints more than a source of freedom. However, our lives and needs require more adaptability, simplicity, and lightness.”

Toyota’s elegant version of the Me.We concept is that the next generation of drivers will value “better” over “more.”

Designed for adaptability, simplicity and lightness

The Me.We is a synthesis of design innovation that is all about freedom from waste and consumption.

Polypropylene panels that are lightweight and 100 percent recyclable are attached to an aluminum-tube structure for a boxy, retro-yet-modernistic look. Its under-floor battery layout, electric power train and wheel-hub motors, which offer the option of two- or four-wheel drive, provide efficiency in energy consumption and space so that the interior is surprisingly roomy.

The Me.We makes the most of its 134.5-inch length, 68.9-inch width and 63-inches height with rear bench seats that can be stored under the front bench seat or removed altogether and the back door folded down for extra storage space. More storage space rides on the roof under a foldout neoprene cover.

The simplicity of the interior is liberating. The instrumentation consists of a single display for driver information, including navigation instructions provided via smartphone. The airy interior can be made even more airy with windows and even a windshield that all drop.

Bamboo flooring is a renewable material that is both aesthetically pleasing and easy to clean. The guys at TopGear think it “looks a little bit brilliant, which is nice.” In fact, they find the whole concept, despite the name, “quite cool.” Green Car Reports thinks so, too, declaring the Me.We “Green From The Wheels Up.”
